2010 IKA Caribbean Course Racing Championship

July 9-11th, 2010

San Juan, Puerto Rico

An International Kiteboarding Class Association sanctioned event


1.1       The 2010 IKA Caribbean Course Racing Championship will be held from July 8th, 2010 to July 11th, 2010.

1.2       The Event includes the following Disciplines, Divisions and Grades:
Open Class Course Racing Men and Women

Weekend Warrior Class: Amateur Men and Women

1.3       The Event gives points for the discipline rankings as follows:
410 points  for Course Racing

1.4       The price money per discipline is as follows:
10000 US $ for Open Class.


2.1 The event will be organised by the Puerto Rico Windsurfing and Kitesurfing Association (PRWKA) for and on behalf of, and under specified conditions laid down by, the International Kiteboarding Class Association (IKA).

2.2 The event is sponsored by Municipio de San Juan, Departamento de Recreación y Deportes, El Nuevo Día, Comp. De Turismo, Automeca, Infopaginas, KitesurfPR, JCremodeling, MauiSails, Velauno, Neilpryde, MontePiedad, Costco, Target Rent A Car; etc.

3.2 Conditions to be expected – winds 15-25 knots; water conditions: flat to moderate chop; water temperature 80-85º; air temperature 85-90º.


4.1 This is an IKA sanctioned event governed by:

4.1.1 The ISAF  Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS), including the Experimental Kiteboarding Competition Rules

4.1.2 The IKA Class Rules

4.1.3 No National Authority prescriptions will apply.

4.1.4 This Notice of Race (NoR) and the Sailing Instructions (SI)

4.1.5 The IKA Point System

4.1.6 The IKA Code of Conduct

4.2 If there is a conflict between the Notice of Race and the Sailing Instructions (SI’s), the SI’s shall take precedence.

4.3 If there is a conflict between languages, the English text will take precedence.




5.1 All entries shall meet the requirements of ISAF Regulation 19 - Eligibility Code.

5.2 Competitors shall be members of a National Kiteboarding Class Association, or of the relevant International Class Association. National Associations shall be paid up members of the IKA.

5.3 Individual Membership formalities can be completed on site.

5.4 Entry numbers are limited as follows:
No restriction.

5.5 The following qualifying procedures or systems apply:
No previous qualification required to compete.

5.6 Competitors shall provide the following documentation prior to completing registration formalities on site:

  • Original Entry Form
  • Proof of Entry Fee payment
  • Evidence of valid third party insurance
  • Proof of age
  • Parental/legal Guardian Assent - for those under age of 18
  • Medical Treatment Permission - for those under age of 18 or on their parents medical insurance policy

5.7 Coaches and team support personnel shall provide the following documentation prior to completing registration formalities on site:

  • Original Coach Entry Form
  • Proof of Coach Entry Fee payment
  • Boat Driving Licence (if applicable)
  • Evidence of valid third party insurance
  • Proof of ICA membership

5.8 The Registration will take place at Parque Barbosa, July 8th, 2010 3pm-7:00pm.


6.1 The Entry Fee is as follows:

Open Class: $120 USD plus ($8.40 tax)

Weekend Warrior: $100 USD plus ($7.00 tax)

6.2 The Coach Entry Fee for ICA members is $50 USD, and $60 USD for non ICA coaches and other team personnel.

6.3 All Registration forms and documents will be available on-line at

6.4 Entry fees shall be paid by credit card and or paypal on-line by July 5, 2010.

12:00 PM First Possible Warning Signal. Course Racing on Ultimo Trolley/ Ocean Park Beach, subsequent races to follow

July 10th:

9:00 AM:  Skipper’s Meeting, Ultimo Trolley Beach

11:00 AM First Possible Warning Signal. Course Racing on Ultimo Trolley/ Ocean Park Beach, subsequent races to follow

8.1 ISAF Regulation 20 - Advertising Code- shall apply.

8.2 Competitors may be required to carry advertising for event sponsors – both on their kiteboards, and on a lycra vest if supplied by the organiser.



9.1 It is the responsibility of each competitor to ensure that his/her board and equipment conforms to its Class Rules.

9.2 Equipment checks may be made throughout the event.

9.3 Competitors shall bring their own equipment.


10.1 Every competitor is required to wear the official event lycra with his personal identification number whenever competing




11.1 If personal buoyancy is prescribed every competitor and support boat crewmember shall wear, above the waist, a jacket harness or vest with a minimum buoyancy of 4kg un-inflated in fresh water. The buoyancy shall be tested with a ferrous metal weight of 4kg, which shall remain supported for a minimum of 5 minutes.

11.2 Personal buoyancy is mandatory for all competitors under 17 years of age.



12.1 The official notice board is located in Ultimo Trolley Beach, competition Site.



13.1 The event SIs' will be available at first skippers meeting, The Event Programme scheduling social events will be available during registration.

13.2 Alterations to the SIs shall be approved by the Class Representative.


14.1 Courses shall be as prescribed in the Experimental Kiteboarding Competition Rules, in the Sailing Instructions or on the official notice board.



15.1 The alternative low point system of Appendix A shall apply.



16.1 The Scoring Penalty, rule 44.3, will apply. The penalty will be the whole number (rounding 0.5 upward) of places nearest to 10 percent of the boards entered.


17.1 An International Jury may be appointed in accordance with the RRS Appendix N.

17.2 Their decisions will be final and cannot be appealed, as specified in RRS 70.5.



18.1 Support boats shall clearly display their national 3 letter country code in black on a white background, either on a flag of a minimum of 50cm x 40cm in size or on the cover of their outboard engine.



19.1 On completion of registration and continuing until the end of the regatta, when ashore (other than when launching and retrieving), all equipment shall be kept in their assigned places at Parque Barbosa (In front of Competition Site). Removal of any equipment from the regatta site may require prior written approval from the race committee. Access to equipment in the storage area during certain hours, including hours of darkness may be restricted.


20.1 Medals or trophies shall be awarded to the first three competitors in each Class / Division depending on entry numbers. Categories to be awarded in each properly constituted division may be posted on the official notice board after the close of registration.

20.2 Prizes may be awarded as follows:
Open Class Men and Women

1st Place: $3,250.00 US

2nd Place: $2,500.00 US

3rd Place: $2,000.00 US

4th Place: $1,000.00 US

5th Place: $750.00 US

6th Pace: $500.00


21.1 Competitors take part in all races at their own risk. The LOA, IKA, ISAF or any of their officials or representatives or the sponsors or their officials or representatives are not responsible, under any circumstances, for any damage, loss or injury either ashore or on the water either to persons or equipment, which may result.

21.2 Participation in this event, supporting events and in each race in them is at the sole discretion of the sailor and at his/her own risk. Notice is drawn to RRS 4.


22.1 Competitors shall possess valid third party liability insurance with a minimum cover of 500,000 USD.

22.2 Coach and support boat drivers shall also have a valid third party liability insurance with a minimum cover of 5 million USD.


23.1 In registering for the event, competitors automatically grant to the Organising Authority the right in perpetuity to make, use and show from time to time at their discretion, any motion pictures, still pictures and live, taped or filmed television and other reproduction of them, taken during the period of the event, for the said Championship as defined in the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions in which he/she participates without compensation.



24.1 Attendance at the Opening Ceremony, Prize Giving and Closing Ceremony is mandatory.

24.2 The organiser reserves the right to refuse entry to those whose standard of attire is not commensurate with the occasion.


25.1 Competitors are reminded of the ISAF rules and regulations concerning the use of banned methods and substances. Drug testing may take place during the event.



26.1 Accommodation information: Please refer to for more information on places to stay. All recommended accommodation facilities are walking distance to competition Venue.



27.1 A wide range of scheduled flights are available from all over Europe and United States.
