The Myanmar Wave Rider Cup was official launched at the Ngwe Saung Yacht Club and Resort yesterday, the 18th September 2015.
More than 30 media and press joined the launch, to hear details of the event from officials of the Myanmar Yachting Federation. The Myanmar Wave Riders Cup will be the second international watersports event host by the Federation in Ngwe Saung, the first being the 2013 SEA Games.
As a multi-discipline event the Myanmar Wave Rider Cup will combine three different watersports, windsurfing, kiteboarding and stand up paddleboarding. The KTA is lending its support to the event and the Myanmar Yachting Federation to bring kiteboard competition to the country for the first time.
Myanmar as yet does not have any of its own kiteboarders, but it is major aim of the event to change this situation and act as the launch-pad to develop the sport in Ngwe Saung and Myanmar. The KTA as well as running an open kite race section for the Myanmar Wave Rider Cup, will be running its KTA Kite Kids classes for local school kid,s to get their first taste of the sport and power kite ‘try out’ session throughout the event, for anyone to have a go. The plan is then to follow this grassroots kickstart, by establish a kite school at the Ngwe Saung Yaucht Club.
Riders from across SE Asia are joining the competition, with around 60 registrations between the various disciplines to date.
The local organisers at Ngwe Saung are also expecting a lot of local support and anticipate crowds several hundred each day. The event has been timed to coincide with the Full Moon of Thadingyut, which marks the end of Buddhist Lent with the Festival of Light. Competitors traveling Myanmar to join the event will not only be part of a great new competition, but will also get a taste of its vibrant culture.
