KTA Thailand: Its a wrap !

The final day of this year’s visit to Thailand started off on the un-easy side. With the crew boat broken down in the morning while setting the course and no wind on the horizon, the day did not look promising. But the wind started to fill in around noon and the boat problem was quickly fixed so the race was on.

At first winds were light, only those with course boards could participate. A smoothly run race where Blazej Ozog from Poland once again dominated. The KTA regulars watched with interest as the now ongoing competition between Yo Pudla (Thailand) and Heikki Gross (Estonia) for 2nd place continued. Heikki took 2nd in both morning races with Yo as third, then first. In the end it was Yo who secured his overall position as 2nd on the podium, with Heikki as third and Ozog standing tall on top. For those following the tour, Deivis Maciulis is currently healing from an injury and was was unable to compete this round. However he was spotted intensely watching the racing with a smile on his face. For the women it was Kathrin Borgwardt (Germany) who took first and Ramona Serea (Romania) who took 2nd.

The wind had picked up and the second race of the day included the TT class. With another race won at the end of the day. New favorite Ken Nacor (Philippines) took first overall. Another first on the tour, Max Rice (Canada) finished 2nd, both of these upsetting the balanced competition between Kin Nguyen Ngoc (Vietnam) from the KINN Pro Rider Team and Dennis Wong (Hong Kong) that had been forming on the tour thus far this year, neither making the podium as 3rd place was also taken by a new face, Toto (Dilbert) Bayog (Philippines) has followed Nacor’s lead, his mentor, into the TT scene. For the woman it was Aya Oshima (Japan) who easily took 1st. Alice Child, Australian and a local face around Mui Ne, Vietnam took 2nd and Thailand represented well on home soil through Sotenn Sparat who won 3rd.

We were lucky this round and had wind all 4 days! Finishing Freestyle a day early allowed this final days afternoon of stronger wind to open the playground for Old School entertainment! Toby Braeuer (Germany) , Godfather of Old School, was here to show off his latest tricks while building an interest to what he believes is a base line for the sport of kitesurfing. For this competition there were no exact heats run with the feeling that this style of competition needs to be more open, free, and about the entertainment value. There fore riders could ride whenever they wanted, for how ever long they wanted the whole competition. But it was in this last day with no freestyle that we got a show!

Since it was to be an show, judges included spectators, media, riders, and the actual judges. Mr. Braeuer won this for the men and Thai local star, Nung Sonchai, took second. The freestyle champ, Taner Aykurt (Turkey), took third with his many board offs and infamous jesus walk. For the women it was Kathrin Borgwardt who won first, Jannicke who took 2nd and yet another new face, Aina Renolen (Norway), who took third.

A very successful competition. Now we get ready to devour amazing Thai flavors while waiting for an amazing awards ceremony! Next stop, Boracay, Philippines March 8-12 featuring a female pro clinic presented by 9 time world champ Kristin Boese and the KB4girls foundation.
