New Records tumble as Luderitz Speed Challenge commences

Written by Editor on . Posted in News

After two weeks of relatively light winds, the well known Luderitz wind machine is working again and produced a new kitespeed world record yesterday. Alex Caizergues set the bar to 50.98 knots, followed by Rob Douglas at 50.95. That is a difference of approximately 20 cm over the 500m distance.

Event Founder Sebastien Cattelan was just shy of 50 knots with a 49.51 knot run - one year ago this would have been the absolute speedsailing world record.

On the womens side, Charlotte Consorti and  Sjoukje Bredenkamp are close to their top speeds from last year, but did not do better yet.

With strong winds forecasted for today as well, there is hope to see more records go, and probably also the absolute speed record, currently held by the multi-million dollar hydrofoif catamaran "Hydroptere" at 51.36 knots.
