Massive heats highlighted the seventh day of the Tarifa Pro Kite Tour that delivered amazing performances in both men’s and women’s divisions. An early evening lull in the wind forced the postponement of the competition only to return
The weather in Mielno during the second day of the 2014 Formula Kite European Championships was better for long walks on the beach than for running kiteboard races: beautiful sun and the wind getting weaker every hour. Even though the breeze was just strong enough in the morning with several start attempts and late AP flags due to the wind droping below 5 knots, it got too light after 5 races (2 rounds of men yellow and green and one womens race), and with no sign of increasing winds AP over A was displayed at 16:30 hours.
Best in the light winds proved defending European Champion Oliver Bridge (GBR, North) with a 2-1 score and Alejandro Climent (ESP, TMV/Ozone) with a 1-1 score in their respective groups. Bridge is now leading the overall ranking ahead of Climent and Riccardo Leccese (ITA, ML/Ozone) who is tied in points with Climent.
With only 2 points between places 2 and 5 the competition was fierce, and every rider in the top 10 is able to win races.
In the womens fleet it was again Elena Kalinina (RUS, UC/Elf) dominating the fleet, now 6 points ahead of second ranked Aga Grzymska (POL, ML/Ozone) and Tatiana Sysoeva (RUS, ML/Ozone) in third.
With two 17-year old riders now leading the championship tomorrows final series for the men and the continuation of the single opening series of the women will shift the focus on the coveted 10 places in the Medal Series, scheduled for Sunday, September 7.
The European Championship in Kiteracing in Mielno attracts lots of attention from the spectators on the beach. Many of them were spectating the competition from the boardwalk by the beach or from the beach itself.
Weak wind is a great concern both for the competitors and the organisers. Agnieszka Grzymska, from the Polish racing team, says : „Day two of the championship is over. I am currently second in the ranking list. Unluckily, we have only had one race today, in which I came third. The other planned races were postponed due to the marginal wind, that was dropping below 5 knots. I hope that tomorrow will bring better conditions."
