Andy Wong and Erika Heineken win theWest Coast Tour of kiteboard racing

Written by Editor on . Posted in News

The six-stop 2014 tour spanning from Vancouver Island to San Diego marked the first year in a new era of kiteboard racing. Hydrofoiling kiteboards have arrived and are now being featured exhibitionstyle alongside top performing Formula Raceboards. This relativelely new platform brought an exciting dynamic to the already supremely performing sailing class. By the end of the tour both fleets were stacked with the world's best racers and it was 'game on'.

Wong showed his mettle in the Raceboard fleet by winning two events and finishing fifth in another. Wong said of his performance, "The level of competition is super high. I just tried to stay focused at each individual event. The sport is going in a great direction... I'm so stoked."

Heineken outperformed her rivals in a different way having competed in both the Formula Kiteboard and Hydrofoil Kiteboard divisions, racing double the amount of anyone else on the tour. She remarked "As long as I could finish in the top part of each fleet I could go to the beach, switch boards, and get back in time for the Preparatory signal. Mostly it's fun because I get to race against so many people."

In a quiet ceremony on Marin County's Christmas Tree Hill Wong and Heineken accept their awards as 2014 West Coast Tour Champions.

The West Coast Tour's unique partnerships joined kiteboarding industry stalwarts and local sailing clubs up-and-down the coast and made for an exciting journey. American Kiteboarding Association president Andrew Koch highlighted, "Our industry is behind us and the yacht clubs really like what we've brought to the sport of sailboat racing. It's been a great synergy."

Forty-seven participants from fifteen countries competed in the tour which had breakout performances from sailors like Nico Landauer (Uruguay, 2nd place) and Peter Martel (Canada, 3rd place). Also competing in the tour were international stars including Riccardo Leccese, Catherine Dufour, Oliver Bridge, Jessica Sickinger, Brian Kender, John Heineken, and upcoming youth stars like Nicolai Sutter Sponholtz and Nils Stolzlechner...to name a few.

The West Coast Tour will will be unraveling even more excitement in 2015.
