Kalinina and Trittel take home first ever kiteboarding titles in Trofeo Princesa Sofia

Written by Editor on . Posted in News

After changing the course area to a new launching site, the medal series stage of the kiteboarding event at the 46th Trofeo Princesa Sofia went underway, with three races scheduled for both the mens and the womens fleet.

In perfect 12-15 knots racing conditions, specators along the promenade of Can Pastilla could witness some exciting racing, with extreme close mark roundings and often photo finishes.

Florian Trittel (ESP, ML/Elf) continued to dominate the fleet with another three bullets, finishing off the event with a perfect score, winning all races but one. The second place overall was also taken by the hosting country, Alejandro Climent (ESP, ML/Elf) fought his way back to the podium after a problematic first day. Ivan Doronin (RUS, ML/Elf) completed the podium after a very consistent regatta, only 2 points shy of the second place.

An even more impressive perfomance was shown by 17 year old Elena Kalinina (RUS, UC/Elf), winning all ten races with a margin. The second place overall goes to Anastasia Akopova (RUS, ML/Ozone) ahead of Jade OConner (IRL, TMV/Ozone) who made her first podium appearance on a major event.

"I am so excietd with my results here. I really didn't expect to win all the races. The racing conditions were not easy but in the end we did 10 races. The venue today in Can Pastilla was much better for launching and for racing. I hope we will be there next year. It was great to be part of the Trofeo Sofia IBEROSTAR with all the other Olympic classes, it is a great start for our future and hope we will be included again in more regattas with the Olympic classes."  said event winner Kalinina.

About her goals for the rest of the year the 17 year old Russian rider adds: "This win is giving me confidence to go and compete in the year main regattas: the European and world championship. Then I hope to be selected for the Sailing World Cup final in Abu Dhabi."

Same reaction from Florian Trittel: "I am very proud to win this event in Palma. I hope we will return next year with more riders. This is a good step towards the inclusion of kite in the Olympic Games!"

Trittel and Kalinina lead the kiteboarding fleet into the medal races

Written by Editor on . Posted in News

Another challenging day in Palma concluded the opening series with 7 races completed. Both Florian Trittel (ESP, ML/Elf) and Elena Kalinina (RUS, UC/Elf) go into the last days 3-race medal series with a perfect score.

The day started off with a postponement ashore for all 11 classes racing in Palma, before the seabreeze kicked in from South West. A late postponement was signalled when the wind died off from the top of the course and the fleet sent ashore again.

What followed was a long no-wind period, before the seabreeze came back up in the late afternoon again. But it was already 7pm before the fight between onshore breeze and offshore gradient wind finally was won by the seabreeze and the fleet being sent another time. The seventh race of the opening series went down in good racing conditions, with Trittel taking the victory another time ahead of Denis Taradin (RUS, ML/Elf) and Ivan Doronin (RUS, ML/Elf).

In the womens fleet, Kalinina completed her perfect score with another victory ahead of Jade OConnor (IRL, UC/Elf) and Nuria Goma (ESP, ML/Ozone).

The final race of the day was started at 1935 hours with the hope that the wind would last for another couple of minutes, however in the second lap the wind started to die off and finally on the reach to the finish line completely disappeared, forcing the race to be abandoned just meters before the finish line. 5 minutes more of wind would have been all thats needed.

Racing continues on the final day with the medal series, where the best 10 in both genders compete in a 3-race non-discardable series on a shortened course.

Overall Standings after seven races:

MEN
1. Florian Trittel (ESP, ML/Elf) - 6 pts
2. Ivan Doronin (RUS, ML/Elf) - 20 pts
3. Denis Taradin (RUS, ML/Elf) - 24 pts

WOMEN
1. Elena Kalinina (RUS, UC/Elf) - 5 pts
2. Anastasia Akopova (RUS, ML/Ozone) - 16 pts
3. Jade O'Connor (IRL, UC/Ozone) - 18 pts

Nightmare conditions force racing to be abandoned on day 3 of Palma

Written by Editor on . Posted in News

Winds ranging from 0 to 27 knots average and gusts up to 44 knots forced racing to be abandoned in the kiteboarding course area after a long day of waiting.

Shortly before the 12:00 warning signal, the race committee decided to keep all riders ashore when the first heavy gusts hit the course. When the wind settled down a bit to a more manageable 20 knots average, the race committee then quickly had to learn that the wind completely disappeared to virtually 0 knots within a 15 minute period. What followed were hours of shifting winds, attempts to reset the course to allow for fair racing did not succeed.

Being the most northerly of all course areas, the north-northwest wind was most gusty and shifty, coming over the mountains and the city of Palma.

Several start attempts were made, with the fleet sailing on their smallest kites in survival conditions, but the conditions never stabiised enough to allow for fair racing. Racing was postponed to the next days in the late afternoon with hope that conditions will be more manageable on the penultimate day of the regatta.

Six races have been sailed so far in the first two days of the regatta, and sailors as well as race committee hopes to be able to complete a full schedule on Tuesday before Wednesdays Medal Races.
