Safety, fun and kite control – that how we started our kids. It requires the right stuff and a lot of empty place in all conditions.
They were flying the Ignition trainer kites on grass, sand wherever it was windy, on concrete with their skateboards, on grass with mountainboards, on snow with sleds, bobs, skies, snowboards and finally in the water. They both could fly the Ignition with closed eyes the time we allowed them to bodydrag in the water. They naturally learned to handle the kite with a lot of fun in all conditions.
Then we started last year with our at that time 9 year old daughter Leonie (about 1.2m tall and about 25 kg that time) in Egypt with the 2.5m2 Uno to ride with the Board. From beginning on she was able to step on the Board. She rarely dropped the kite. During our 2 week holidays she learned to ride 100m on each side. Our at that time 6 year old boy Jonas had to stay with the Ignition on beach and bodydraging in the water. His favorite maneuver was handlepass at the beach and doing one handed kiteloops while bodydraging (he is calling it laser sword).
This summer we went to Nissum Fjord in Denmark with them because there is endless space and kneedeep water for Beginners. Leonie is able to keep height with her 4m2 Uno from 10 knots on. She is riding behind us all over the fjord. Still she is dropping the kite maybe once or twice a day. Her next goal is to jump.
In the beginning Jonas was still just allowed to ride the Ignition. He was playing with our old board in the water and managed to step on the Board and ride for 100m with the Ignition. So at that time we realized it was time to give him a try with the Uno. The last day of our holidays he was riding the first meters with the Uno and can’t wait for our next time on water.
That’s our personal family kite story. Most important for us having fun together with our kids and don’t stress them in wired conditions. Unfortunately we live in Switzerland where the possibilities on water are limited for the kids. Bud next winter for sure we will be in the mountains with them. Keep you updated
