PKRA News:Day 3 - Beach Day in St Peter-Ording

Written by PKRA on . Posted in News

The third day of the Think Blue Kitesurf World Cup carried on today with no wind and a relaxed sense of anticipation due to all forecasts predicting a light wind day. Although a slight breeze presented itself in the morning and steadily faded as the afternoon hours passed. With the sun peeking through a shallow layer of clouds overhead, the North Sea slowed to a calm and the riders were released at 5pm.

In lieu of competition, some competitors spent time meeting fans and signing autographs in their sponsor’s booths. However, most spent their free time hanging out, speculating on the week’s forecast, and soaking in the warm weather while meandering throughout the village and taking advantage of all that it has to offer. To refer to the event site as a “village” is not an overstatement on any level. It encompasses a huge area and is touted as the largest temporary beach venue anywhere in the world. With relaxing hang out areas, food and drink abundant, and a plethora of beach activities throughout the village, competitors and spectators alike took the day in stride, making the most of the day.

Remarking on the no-wind activities, German freestyle and slalom competitor Florian Gruber commented, “The event village is really big, so there is still so much to do. You can see what the other brands are doing and check out all the new gear. Also, there is a lot of out-of-industry sponsors, as well as TV and media present here, so it is good to take advantage of that when there is no competition.”

“The large scale of this event is second to none and it continues to grow each year. I think the big events are good for everyone, the riders get to show off their sponsors and promote them in front of such a big audience, it is win-win on all sides” continued Gruber. With the world’s best freestyle and slalom competitors present, and a world-class venue to showcase it all, mother-nature is the only variable remaining in the equation.

The forecast for the coming days is improving. Tomorrow we will see a chance of lighter winds in the afternoon hours and the return to stronger winds later in the week. Hopes are high for slalom and trials actioin to resume. Riders will meet at 10:30 am for a first possible start at 11 am.  For updates on broadcast start times and announcements regarding the 2014 PKRA Think Blue Kitesurf World Cup, stay tuned in to the PKRA Facebook page and Twitter Feed.
