The second annual Hainan international kitesurfing Festival got underway today with the registration of the top PKRA riders. Most riders have been here for two three days and have taken advantage of conditions. The winds have been in the 15 knot range, except for today when the trade winds did not kick in. All the top riders are here ready to do battle the second consecutive Chinese event. Alex Pastor has already clinched his world title; Gisela Pulido can clinch another one with a win here.
The tropical island of Hainan is a great venue to hold kite surfing world cup. The light trade winds are perfect for freestyle. The water is warm and the wind is hot, so no wetsuits are required to enjoy the conditions. After the extreme conditions of the last event, this event will be much tamer but the perfect Trade winds allow the riders to really push their technical riding. We can expect to see many great tricks and riders to be pushing the execution of every move.
Everyone is staying at the Tienyow Grand Hotel just across the street from the event site, with its hot pools and great buffets everyone is enjoying their five-star hotel accommodations. Getting closer to the end of the season all the top riders are getting focused on getting some top results and securing one of the coveted top eight spots, so that they will not have to do trials at the beginning of next year and will be automatically qualify for the main event.
The opening ceremony took place at the beach today with all the officials welcoming the PKRA riders to the island of Hainan. Later in the evening a banquet dinner was held with traditional Chinese food and great service that was a delight.
With the typhoon moving into the South China Sea it looks like the trade winds will not be present for the weekend and that will have to hold out a few more days before we get some suitable conditions. However the thermal can always kick in and provide the perfect opportunity for the riders to show their best maneuvers.
