Well guess we don’t really have to tell you all that the inclusion of kite racing into the 2016 Olympic Games is going to have some impact on our sport at all levels. There is a lot happening for sure though with new pieces of information appearing almost weekly at the moment it takes a lot of keeping up with and certainly there are going to be some changes required that will directly affect the new KTA season.
For the moment of course there still is a bit of a question mark hanging over the Olympic status for kiteboarding with the windsurf campaign and legal action against ISAF looking to overturn the decision at the November ISAF Conference. So we have to see what the outcome of that will be, but regardless of this the IKA have already asked us to put some changes in place so that kite racing can work more in line with the international ISAF sailing processes and schedules.
For the KTA the main impact of this is that we need to realign our course race titles and season to work on a calendar year rather than with our winter monsoon season as we do now. This means that the Asian Course Race Championships from this season (the 11/12 KTA season) are now considered to be the 2012 Asian titles, to be followed now next year with the 2013 title and so on after that.
The KTA course racing open tour titles for both the RB and TT classes will now be awarded at the last event of the year rather than the KTA season. This will for most seasons be in December somewhere and start with December 2013, although for this first year any course race tour stop events that take place in the remainder of 2012 will also be included into the 2013 rankings.
We realise it’s a bit weird and will in effect mean the racing titles are decided over a much longer period of time, as in the whole year with a gap in the middle for the summer, but it is the only way we can meet the ISAF requirements, plus it will spread the championship title awards out through different events in the season which could be fun and another excuse for a big party…………
Freestyle will not be affected by these changes and the championship titles will still be awarded within the season. So for the coming season that will mean the 12/13 Asian Freestyle titles will be based again on three selected tour stops with the KTA Open Freestyle titles will be based on all the 12/13 tour stops .
Other format changes for this coming season will also we think be including more single discipline events, so either just freestyle or just course racing at some locations. The core of the tour though will remain with the standard freestyle + race package we are all use to. There will we hope be some extra race event opportunities in addition to the tour package as we know this is going to be a growing part of the sport and we want to give you the chance to develop those racing skills as much as possible as we head towards 2016.
In addition to all that can also let you know although it’s not fully official yet that the KTA has been working hard on bringing the 2013 Course Race World Championships to Asia and we are not too far off finalising that, plus in the wings we also have the potential of hosting perhaps the first round of a new Airstyle Old Skool World Tour being considered for 2013 also.
So exciting times ahead everyone, brave new world and all that and we will do our best to keep on top of it all for you and keep Asia right up there in the mix.
