Welcome to the International Kiteboarding Association

Our Vision

To grow, evolve and promote the sport of kiteboarding across the globe and across all disciplines.

For more information please also visit our topic specific websites:

Formula Kite

The Formula Kite class is a high performance hydrofoiling class using regulated series registered production equipment freely available.

For Regional Games and a possible inclusion in the Olympic Games, one hydrofoil model and one kite model will be selected for a plain level playing field and to avoid an arms race.

KiteFoil GoldCup

The KiteFoil class is a full development class with minimal equipment limitation, allowing brands to test the latest equipment on the market.

The GoldCup tour is the sports premium event series with events all around the world and a strong focus on media production and prize money level.

Slalom

Slalom on TT:R (TwinTip boards) has been selected as the discipline and equipment for the Youth Olympic Games 2018 in Buenos Aires.

The focus of this high-octane discipline is on equipment handling and technique and includes reaching starts, reaching courses, and obstacels to jump.

Expression

The Expression Disciplines currently include Freestyle, Big Air, Wave Riding, Strapless Freestyle and Park. Competition is judged on difficulty and execution rather than "first past the post".

World Sailing, IKA and GKA have agreed to share the responsibilities for the Expression Disciplines with the Open World Titles awarded through professional tours.

Youth Olympics

Kiteboarding has been included in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games with a boardercross event on IKA TwinTip:Racing equipment, for boys and girls born between 2000 and 2003.

Have a look here to learn more about equipment limitations, formats and qualification opportunities.

Olympic and Regional Games

The IKA continues to campaign for an inclusion of kiteboarding in the 2020 Tokyo Games and several Regional Games on One Design Kitefoiling Equipment.

The Formula Kite class is the only afforadable solution for emerging and developing nations to compete in high performance classes and ticks all boxes of the IOC requirements, especially for youth and media appeal.

Kitezone KTA Thailand 2013

Round 2 of our breakneck start to the season is now just around the corner and its back to one of our regular haunts an over at Pak Nam Pran Beach, Pranburi in Thailand. Always a favorite with the riders and lucky with the wind, we are once again looking forward to what Pranburi has to offer us this season.

The event runs from the 13 – 17 March and will again be preceded by our new KTA Kite Kids power kite training session for the local school children in the area to get their first taste of the kiteboard world. Our first KTA Kite Kids proved to be a great hit with the kids in Indonesia at the end of February, so Kathrin and her local support team of kite instructors are looking forward to seeing how it goes down with the Thai kids.

Also back for the KTA Thailand is another success story from the first round, this time in the shape of the Weekend Warriors Fun Race. The weekend fun race idea was introduced to open up the KTA for locally based riders who could not get the time off work to attend the full event or who were not so sure about being part of the full TT class fleet. In the end 29 local Weekend Warriors joined us from Singapore and Indonesia and added another dimension to the competition, it was great see and impressive to have so many local riders take part in what for many was their first kiteboard competition, a great way to test the water.  So we wait to see what will happen in Thailand, will the Bangkok Weekend Warriors descend upon us?

(check the KTA Facebook for the Weekend Warrior registration details)

Wind conditions at the competition location, which will again be centered around the Kitezone @ the Beachouse on Pak Nam Pran, are building nicely and looking good for the competition week. No advice from us this time on kite sizes to bring after the high wind turn out in Bintan, so just bring the lot.

Everything is once again hosted in Thailand by our long term tour sponsors Kite Zone and as always outside the on-water events we are looking forward to an interesting package of evening socials that will add to the whole KTA Thailand experience.  In addition to Kite Zone and our other tour Sponsors we have good local level support in the form of the Sports Authority of  Thailand, Tourism authority of Thailand, Ley Café, Evason resort & Spa and Bacchus Home resort. Plus one our new media partners the Lonely Planet Magazine will be making an appearance to cover the event and introduce you to the magazine version of this world renowned travel guide.

So it’s all looking good for the KTA Thailand and with USD 15,000 of lovely prizes up for grabs courtesy of Cabrinha, Pranburi is the place to be if you’re a kiter next week. And let’s see if our round 1 leaders Long Nguyen Duc, Kathrin Borgwardt, Victoria Soloveykina, Atte Kappel, Rebecka Maudel and “Yo” Narapichit Pudla can hold onto their positions and what promises to be another action filled week of KTA competition.

See you in Thailand
